Madeira is the Portuguese word for “Wood”, or “Timbeeeeeeerrrr!!!” if you prefer, since the guys who discovered the island in 1419 decided to chop the trees down so they could build a nice place to live in.
Set between the mountains and the sea, our city Funchal – the capital of the island and literally the “place where fennel grows” – is much more than the birthplace of Cristiano Ronaldo! Come and enjoy our sub-tropical climate, with walks in the forest and dives in the warm atlantic ocean. Ramble around Funchal's well-kept historical centre. Go crazy with “Poncha”, our traditional fruit cocktail made with sugar cane brandy. Go bananas with the succulent meat in the “Espetada” and get stuck on the tasty limpets.
And please don't let the 60-plus tourists that make the city a world-wide famous vacation spot scare you out: us young locals know how to have fun and will show you that there's nothing boring about our laid-back lifestyle.
